Confederate Symbols to be Removed From County Buildings, City May Follow

In July 2015, Bexar County officials voted to remove two Confederate markers from county properties, including a 1936 Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway marker at the Bexar County Courthouse. Concurrently, San Antonio city officials began assessing Confederate symbols on municipal properties, notably the 1899 Confederate monument in Travis Park.

In late October 2023, the Ruiz-Herrera Cemetery Association convened to address concerns about the installation of Confederate crosses by the Alamo City Guards Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Descendants of those interred found the symbols offensive. The board voted to remove two of the three crosses and deferred the decision on a proposed Tejano Confederate statue until 2024.
Statue dedication Nov. 10 will salute Tejano Confederates

On November 10, 2024, a 7-foot bronze statue honoring Tejano Confederate soldiers will be dedicated at the Ruiz-Herrera Cemetery in Von Ormy, Texas. The statue, sculpted by an artist affiliated with Monuments across Dixie, recognizes the contributions of Tejanos who served in the Confederacy.
