The Corpus Christi chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is calling for the removal of the Queen of the Sea fountain at La Retama Park.
The 106-year-old fountain was commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy to commemorate Confederate soldiers from Texas, a Instagram post from the chapter said.
On Thursday, the chapter urged the community to call upon Mayor Joe McComb, City Council and the City’s Arts and Cultural Commission to begin taking steps to remove the downtown fountain.
“We think it no longer has a place in our city and would like to start the discussion on removing it and replacing it with something that better reflects our ideals,” the post said.
The fountain is one of 80 pieces in the Corpus Christi Public Art Collection owned by the citizens of Corpus Christi.
