A monument recognizing the first all-volunteer black regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War was defaced during Sunday’s protests.

Multiple demonstrations had gathered in Boston peacefully throughout the day, lending their voices to the nationwide anger sparked by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died on Memorial Day after being pinned to the ground by the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer.

The monument, which stands across from the Massachusetts State House, is currently surrounded in plywood to protect it while it undergoes restoration to reinforce the sword held by Robert Gould Shaw.

After Sunday’s demonstrations turned violent and destructive, the plywood was left covered in obscene graffiti.
