It’s been nearly two years since the Confederate monument was removed from Travis Park, taken down in the dead of night after a 10-1 City Council vote.
The promise was to contextualize the monument in a museum, but that has yet to happen. The monument, two Civil War cannons and a corresponding time capsule have been warehoused in separate, undisclosed locations. The city and the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy are litigating the monument’s ownership and placement, as well as concerns about possible damage.
But as time has marched forward, the question I have returned to is what does it mean to properly contextualize the monument and fully reflect history? This is a moral and historical question, not a legal one. And the only moral answer is to place it in a museum.
